Function of Beauty Honest Review

25 February 2020Haircare

Yes, this review on the Function of Beauty products is quite overdue but I finally finished nearly all the products and wanted to wait for this to give my honest opinion. If only you knew how long I’ve wanted to try this duo…if only. I nearly bought the set once but the price was definitely a factor for reconsideration. The idea was quite unique and ingenious – personalised shampoo and conditioner for your hair? Awesome! So when Function of Beauty reached out to me, I was ecstatic given that price was the only reason why I hadn’t taken the leap until now.

I received 2 of their existing products – the personalised shampoo and conditioner, and their 2 new products – a hair mask and a hair serum (which I think are personalised too?). I just took one test for all products so I guess all 4 products targeted the same hair issues which I selected during my quiz:

  • Anti-frizz – NUMBER ONE PROBLEM. I’ve battled this problem for so damn long.
  • Strengthen
  • Deep condition
  • Shine
  • Hydrate

My other responses:

Hair Profile – Wavy

Hair structure – Medium

Scalp Moisture – Normal

Fragrance – Peach & mandarin

Fragrance strength – medium

I receive the package pretty quickly and couldn’t wait to put it to the test.

DETAILS

Shampoo + Conditioner – €39-€59 based on the size you pick

Hair mask – €19

Hair serum – €19

The ingredient list isn’t anywhere on the website (maybe because they personalise some parts of it, but we can’t even see the base). I received the ingredient list with every product which I threw away (whyyy) but I remember that it was dowsed in silicones. I like, in fact, love silicones, but only a specific amount. I was okay with the hair mask containing a lot of silicone but the hair oil’s first three ingredients were silicones. And it felt like it. It was TOO ‘silicone-y’ for me to use comfortably. I learnt later on that you can say ‘no silicone’ while ordering but I didn’t see the option (oops).

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Okay so the bottles I received were the small ones, but they were sufficient and lasted me months; I also did alternate with other shampoos though.

Another thing you will note right away is the strong scent of the product. So, I went for ‘medium’ in my scent and chose Peaches and Mandarins because they both are literally my favourites! If medium smells that strong, I would HIGHLY advise against getting the ‘strong’ scent. Unless you’re really into super strong smelling products.

After my first wash: I used the whole shebang, the shampoo, the hair mask, the conditioner and the hair serum and my hair had never been less-frizzy before. I loved it. I was so happy to see my hair not showing its bad side and thanked the stars that I got to try this lovely bundle.

I did try to go in with just the shampoo, or just the conditioner to test out which product in particular was doing the magic, or was it the combination of all 4?

LONGER-TERM IMPRESSIONS

As I started using this more often, I started noticing that my scalp started getting oilier faster. Not exactly something I appreciated as I had to take more showers and use more dry shampoo. At first I thought it might be another product or maybe the season changing.

But no, I switched my shampoo and conditioner for a week and noticed that my scalp was back to normal.

I was quite unhappy about this. My hair is of medium-long length and I like to wash my hair every 3 days but I was obliged to do it every second day due to the increased oiliness. Even dry shampoo didn’t work well because my scalp was realllyyyy oily. I have to admit though, I did enjoy my perfect frizz-free hair the first day after the wash, but I felt uncomfortable after the second day.

FINAL THOUGHTS - WILL I BUY THIS MYSELF?

Sadly, no.

Even though the effects at first were great, I didn’t like it long term and prefer other products to combat frizz and keep my hair healthy. I do appreciate that their products are sulphate-free, vegan, cruelty-free but that shouldn’t even be a differentiating factor today as so many brands are jumping on the ‘everything-free’ train.

I’ll still be on the lookout for other products.

However, I would consider buying the hair mask – it’s only €19 and it was well worth the money.
