Farmacy is one of the brands I’ve been talking about in other people’s photos saying ‘omg need to try this!!’ for more than a year. It was time to test out a product and I went for the Green Clean Makeup Removing Balm because it was on discount with 2 other minis which I will review later.
Despite me warning people several times that I’ve heard this comment umpteen times before and I don’t need to hear it again, people tell me all the time how coconut oil causes breakouts.
I used it as my first cleanse for more than 3 years. Coconut oil was great for my skin to break down dirt and makeup and I would follow it up with a second cleanser, which would wash away the coconut oil. I feel like I need to remind people what double cleansing is –
you cleanse the makeup removing balm away – just like I cleanse away the coconut oil with my second cleanse. And yet there are people telling me coconut oil is bad for me. Do you leave your cleansing balm on your skin all night? Nope? Neither do I. Sorry for the rant but I had to make this clear as many people were commenting on this.
Price: €37.95 on Lookfantastic. They used to have this brand in Sephora too but not anymore (oops).
Quantity: 90ml, which is a bit expensive but I did get it on sale
Scent: It has a citrus scent, definitely some added fragrance
This was my first time trying a cleansing balm and not coconut oil and I was impressed! The product turned to oil quite quickly and removed my makeup very effectively. It felt luxurious and didn’t strip my skin at all.
I noticed the scent right away and did like it, however the added fragrance wasn’t an issue with me. This isn’t a product that I will leave on my face, I wash it off very soon and having a tiny bit of fragrance isn’t that harmful in my humble opinion. If you have sensitive skin, then you may want to patch test before using it on your entire face but I don’t think it should affect your skin badly.
Another important point to note – it made my vision hazy after using it. I didn’t expect this at all (apparently this is common if you use cleansing balms?) and felt quite weird about it. It goes away pretty soon but it’s still uncomfortable. The brand recommended removing eye makeup by rubbing downwards instead of using circular motions, which didn’t work the best for me; I had to use circular motions to get all the mascara out. Anyway, I don’t terribly mind being blind for 30 seconds, but I will be on the lookout for another cleanser that hopefully doesn’t do this.
They do have some great products in the ingredient list, such as papaya extract (7th in the list), plenty of oils, ginger root oil (10th in the list), and sunflower seed oil (11th in the list).
They also, as mentioned before, have some skin irritants such as orange peel oil, lime oil and bergamot fruit oil, and some fragrances at the end of the list, but all this doesn’t bother me as much as it’s not a product to be left on the face and I doubt that it does much harm if it’s on the face for 30 seconds.
Full ingredient list:
Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Peg-20 Glyceryl Triisostearate, Peg-10 Isostearate, Polyethylene, Echinacea Purpurea Root Extract, Carica Papaya (Papaya) Fruit Extract, Moringa Pterygosperma Seed Extract, Moringa Oleifera Seed Oil, Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Oil, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil, Glycerin, Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract, Melia Azadirachta Flower Extract, Corallina Officinalis Extract, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil, Amber Powder, Cananga Odorata Flower Oil, Coccinia Indica Fruit Extract, Solanum Melongena (Eggplant) Fruit Extract, Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Extract, Ocimum Sanctum Leaf Extract, Water, Butylene Glycol, Disodium Phosphate, Citric Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Citral, Limonene, Linalool
I love this until now. It does have some flaws but I’m in awe as to how effective and lovely it is to use. Coconut oil in comparison takes a lot of time to break down into oil (it’s solid at room temperature) and does leave behind traces of my mascara, whereas the Green Clean does a great job at washing it all off!
I’ll test out some other products on the market too, as this is quite expensive for what it is, but if I can’t find something as good as this one, I’m going to come back for it!
